Survivors from the golden age of French modernism, these Charles Dudouyt chairs stand as testimony to a master craftsman who changed the course of 20th century design. Dudouyt—the visionary French designer who rose to prominence in the interwar period of the 1930s and 40s—became celebrated for rejecting the ornate excess of Art Deco in favor of something more honest and elemental.
Each stool bears the unmistakable hallmarks of Dudouyt's distinctive aesthetic—robust oak construction with a warmth and solidity that speaks of permanence in an age of disposable design. This was his signature: creating furniture that embraced rustic traditions while pushing modernist boundaries. Before founding his own workshop in Gentilly, Dudouyt cut his teeth designing for the prestigious French department store Au Bûcheron, where he developed his characteristic blend of rural craftsmanship and contemporary form.
The original rush seats remain remarkably intact, showcasing Dudouyt's celebrated technique of contrasting substantial wooden frames with delicate, handwoven natural fibers. The oak has deepened with age into a rich patina while the sturdy frames—instantly recognizable in the salons of Paris—remain as solid as when they left his workshop. These aren't merely chairs, but artifacts from a pivotal moment when French design returned to authenticity—pieces that have witnessed history while awaiting their next chapter in your home.
Dimensions of each: 13.75 x 13.75 x 13.5" tall
