This 17th century French walnut gateleg table stopped us in our tracks when we found it in the sitting room of a French château. Of oval form, it shows rich, time-worn surfaces with the soft glow of centuries of use. The hinged leaves open gracefully on a framework of boldly turned spiral legs joined by stretchers, giving the piece both presence and practicality. Its compact proportions when closed and generous expanse when open would have made it equally suited to daily life and more formal gatherings in its time. A fine example of early craftsmanship that has endured with remarkable character and only gotten better with age , ready to serve once more as a distinguished centerpiece in a foyer or as a dining table.
