Heavy walnut with twin doors carved in deep diamond panels — raised lozenges set inside molded frames, the wood gone nearly black at the edges from old wax. Inside, two fixed shelves in darker pine and an original hand-forged iron lock fitted to the right door. The base sits low on shaped block feet, with a stepped cornice running across the top. A weighty piece — corner chips, a split running across one panel, deep colour everywhere.
Inside are the remnants of a catholic devotion dated & signed 1775. This matters because devotion to the Sacred Heart was officially approved by Rome in 1765, so confraternities like this one were flourishing in the decades right after — and then nearly wiped out during the French Revolution (1789 onward). A piece from this exact window is a small artifact of a very specific religious moment. The fact that it’s pasted to the interior of furniture is also telling. These labels were often affixed inside armoires, prie-dieux, or small devotional cabinets in private homes — a quiet declaration of the household’s piety, hidden from view but always there.
