A beautifully preserved example of a late 19th-century English advertising pot, this ceramic jar once held Burgess’s Genuine Anchovy Paste—an esteemed delicacy “for Toast, Biscuit &c,” proudly marked By Appointment. The black transfer-printed crest and lettering are crisp and finely detailed, displaying the addresses at Hythe Road, Willesden, and 107 Strand, London.
These small stoneware pots were produced as both practical containers and subtle pieces of branding artistry, now highly collected for their typographic and graphic charm. This example retains its original lid and base, with a pleasing glaze tone and minimal age wear along the inner rim consistent with use. A classic addition for collectors of English advertising ware or a distinctive decorative accent in a kitchen or cabinet of curiosities.
Dimensions: 3.5 inch diameter by 1.75 inch tall
