A massive handwoven verdure in the full 17th c. manner: a wooded river landscape with broad-leaved plants across the foreground, tall trees framing left and right, and a distant château and hill town set behind the open middle ground, with waterfowl on the stream at the right. The greens have gone deep indigo and teal where the yellows have faded out of them, against a sky bleached to soft cream, which is exactly how wool ages. Wide floral and fruit border on all four sides, contained by a dark guard band. A rope hanging system runs across the back top edge, so it goes up as it is with nothing to add. Age-related repairs throughout, including loose threads, repaired areas and potential small areas of gap, all consistent with a woven piece of this age. The scale is the rare part, wide enough and tall enough to hold a stairwell or a full dining room wall on its own. Best given distance — it wants a wall you can stand back from.
