Swedish Painted Bedside Table, Early 20th Century

Soft grey paint covers the cupboard and has worn back to warm pine along the top edge, the mouldings and the two half-round columns that flank the door. Faceted diamond blocks sit at either end of the frieze, which looks like a drawer front but is fixed, because the top lifts to show a round cut-out from its days as a night commode. Behind the panelled door the pine is unpainted, with a single shelf. It makes a roomy bedside with a deep cupboard, and the lift-up top is a good hiding place.
